Official Debate: School Uniforms

School uniforms remain a controversial issue in the nation's schools. Studies done to measure performance with and without uniforms have had mixed results. Since states do not track statistics on school uniforms, the exact number of school districts with uniform policies is unknown. However, a survey conducted in 2000 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found 20% of public and private elementary schools and 10% of high schools sampled had mandatory uniform rules. Uniform policies are generally more likely to be found in schools with large numbers of low-income and/or minority students. Proponents of school uniforms say uniforms reduce common problems like theft and fighting and allow administrators to easily identify intruders or outsiders. Supporters add that uniforms may also improve grades by enabling students to focus more on academic performance, reduce disciplinary problems, create unity and remove class distinctions, and are more affordable than expensive designer labels. Those opposed to mandatory uniforms say uniforms infringe upon students' First Amendment right to freedom of expression, stifle creativity and individualism, and place an unfair financial burden on low-income families. Some argue that simply having dress code rules can achieve many of the same benefits of uniforms.

I think that school uniforms would be a good idea because students experience less pressure in deciding what to wear each morning, uniforms cost less overall, student attendance improves, encourages discipline, students takes less time to get ready in the morning, children are free to concentrate on lessons, uniformity promotes a reduction of violence in schools, a decrease in peer pressure to wear trendier brands, uniforms can be reused and recycled, and school intruders are more easily identified in a school of uniformed children. So i think it would help many schools out who has a lot of theses problems.

Many people would agree that school uniforms are more of pain in the rear than they are good. Yes it can in part make it easier in some aspects but overall it's not as easy as just wearing what you want. By not having uniforms you have your different social groups and kids can learn to express themselves and show interest in things they like, with uniforms you don't have the diversity in the school like you would without them.

WhyI've been debating with myself now over which side to choose. Earlier I was against school uniforms, and I still think I am, but I tried doing some research to see if I could understand why people are for it. There are some pretty good reasons why people would be for it, and www.frenchtoast.com also gave me more reasons too. One reason they said was that school uniforms would bring safety back into the halls, meaning theft would drop. Also, they "bring an image of success to students and teachers." Students are doing better in schools, and believe it or not attendance rates went up. Many students didn't feel insecure or like an outsider, because they all looked the same. Those are great results! I'm just not for sure if a small town public school could pull off the uniforms though.

School uniforms are a hot debate right now. Does it limit kids’ individuality? Does an outfit have an impact on your education? According to students who wear uniforms, they boost school pride, reduce peer pressure, and help them stay focused on studies instead of outfits. I for one think that school uniforms wouldn't be a bad idea. It would be nice to be judged on your personality for once instead of the brand of your jeans.

According to the United States Department of Education, in 2010, nearly 1 in 5 public schools required uniforms. The numbers are increasing at a higher rate than what we realize. It might not be that long before our very own OABCIG requires them as well.

I think that schools should all be required to have school uniforms. The study in the article By all Accounts, School Uniforms Improve Learning Environment, author Sharon Prill states that students that dress appropriately for school are better able to dress for office jobs and other business jobs after high school. Wearing school uniforms helps prepare students for the workforce and to feel what it’s like to be professional. The students in schools that require uniforms focus more in school and aren’t judged by their looks. You can still be yourself and express your personality when wearing school uniforms. Kids wouldn’t be made fun of for their clothing choices or for wearing the wrong “brand” if we all just wore the same clothes. Uniforms help present a more consistent and polished look and it would make schools look better.

I believe that school uniforms improve behavior in students. The first reason that I think they improve behavior is because with school uniforms students wouldn’t able to wear colors that are symbolic of gangs that they are in. If they can’t express what gang they belong to than I feel as though student would be treated more fairly, and there would be less harassment. The article, By All Accounts, School Uniforms Improve Learning Environment says, “But the uniforms -- dress codes, really -- also seem to crimp a range of unsavory activities, especially displays of gang colors and resulting altercations.” Another reason that I think school uniforms would improve behavior is because students wouldn’t have to worry about what they were wearing to school. They wouldn’t have to try to dress with the newest fashion to avoid getting made fun of, so their attitudes would be much better. Parents also wouldn’t have to spend as much money on clothes for their children to wear when they went back to school. This would help certain families out a lot that really don’t have the money to go out and buy new clothes all the time. The article says, “Students and parents are spared the dilemma about what to wear, don't need to spend as much on back-to-school clothes, school officials are forced to make fewer judgment calls about appropriate clothing, and Granger educators say students have better attitudes about school.” Also, students would learn how to dress for the future. If they get a job in an office, they are going to have to wear certain outfits to work. When they have school uniforms, it helps them prepare for the ways they are going to have dress in the future. The articles states, “Students who learn to dress appropriately in school also can do so in professional settings, such as offices. This is a key step in getting teenagers prepared for the workforce.” I think that school uniforms would improve the behavior in students in many different ways.

I'm gonna have to disagree with you. Why should a kid be forced to wear a school uniform when it's their parents that pick out their outfits anyways? Why would you wanna spend a lot of money on a uniform just for school? "The cost issue has been a great selling point for a lot of schools," Buesing said. "It's $150 on the average to buy a year's worth of school uniforms." With school uniforms kids will not act any better. Just because gang members can't wear their colors to school doesn't mean they aren't wearing them outside of school. And I'm pretty dang sure that they will still wear some colors to school to. People find ways. In our school a lot of people wear leggings and yoga pants. I don't think they should be allowed to wear those because their butts are all out and you can see the lining of underwear. I just really don't like the idea of school uniforms. They can wait until I'm out of school to do that stuff.

Uniforms tend to be expensive. I don't think students should have to wear uniforms or be forced to wear uniforms because it takes away the right to express themselves. Making someone wear something they don't want to will not help the students attendance, it could just make it worse. It could make it worse because if the student feels pressured to do something they don't want to do, then they just won't show up. Some students may feel that the only way they can express themselves is through the way they dress. It's the students choice to wear what they want. Taking that right away can cause more violence and the attitudes of students towards the staff can increase dangerously. It wouldn't really change the violence in the schools. If a student has a problem with another, then there is bound to be problems, no matter what they wear. Students should have the right to choose what they want to wear, whether it is expressing themselves or just because they want to wear something more comfortable.

School Uniforms cost less but not overall, since students don't want to wear school uniforms out of school as well, so parents will have to spend more overall. Students want to feel like there own person so they don't want to be another face in school. A way to be there own person is by there own look, they don't want there look to be of there school. So parents will spend money on uniforms and there children's look.

Yes there are many good points to having a school uniform but uniforms are a bad idea. They don't always ensure equality with students, it may cause rivalries to become worse by marking students like two different teams. Some schools may have more fancy uniforms compared to schools with lower quality uniforms and it may cause bullying from one school to the other because the other school's uniforms are not as good as others. And as for uniforms costing less, this is not true. Some families may be struggling as it already. Now they have to buy the uniform and a few of them because you wouldn't wear the same one every day. And on top of having to buy uniforms the parents will still have to buy clothes for students outside of school settings.

I have to say i agree with the uniform idea. Although students don’t like the way they look or thinks it "dumb" to wear a uniform, I believe that it helps the student and other students focus on what's important. It takes less time to get ready in the morning and students won’t tease the other students about what they wear or what they look like. Students tend to get better grades when they are forced to wear the uniforms rather than not wearing them. They focus on their education more than others appearance.

School uniforms improve people behavior. I think that school uniforms improve people's behavior because they don’t have to worry about what they look like if everyone is were the same clothes. In the study of Lee Jolley, Leigh Southward and Melinda Swafford is that “ their findings indicate that students uniforms have no direct effect on substance abuse, behavioral problems, school safety, school attendance, or academic achievements.” School uniforms help people to not worry about judging people of what they are wearing. I think we would still have problems in school because some people will behave different because everyone is wearing the same thing. But i think school uniforms are a good thing because people don’t have to worry how people judge their looks. People would have a better education then worry about how they look in a certain outfit. I dont think that school uniforms would improve anybodys behavior. If you force kids to wear something they didn’t want at all they’re going to act out. I was reading through an article about the cons of school uniforms on kidsfashion.about.com and everything have listed seems to be right. I think so anyways. Kids like to wear something they’re comfortable in. Some girls aren’t comfortable wearing dresses and skirts. Also, the school and staff members need to consider the financial side of this. Think about the low income families and the families with multiple kids going to school. That would be really expensive and a huge burden for them. Therefore, school uniforms are just a bad idea.

Wearing uniform doesn't mean having the stereotype of just wearing skirts and dresses for girls. They have the option of wearing shorts and pants too. In the long run, uniforms can be very cheap as opposed to wearing normal clothes. Especially for families with multiple kids. Students that has graduated donate back their uniforms to the school or pass it down to their younger siblings. As for improving the behavior, Kids will soon realize that uniforms are easier to handle with in the morning with not having to wake up early to find clothes and match outfits. It also reduces the load of laundry for teenagers.

A famous quote from President Clinton was in 1996 when he said, "If it means teenagers will stop killing each other over designer jackets, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear school uniforms."

A lot of people are against school uniforms but a lot of people are for them. School uniforms do not kill anybody. In fact, according to Marian Wilde, they save lives. By enforcing school uniforms, it is said that there is a lesser rate of gangs forming at school. This is a great benefit because gangs usually dress in color code. Two gangs for example that do this is the Bloods and the Crypts. For example, the Bloods wear red to represent their gang, whereas the Crypts wear blue to represent theirs. Therefore, it would be harder to depict the different gangs in the school and there would be less violence.

Wilde also says that school uniforms help parents save money due to the fact that their children are not peer pressured into buying the “in style” of clothing. This is very common in probably every school around the world. There are always those “popular” people who influence the style of clothing that everyone should where. With school uniforms though, they are already wearing the same thing as those “popular” kids. Therefore there would not be any peer pressure for the kids to buy expensive clothing, like Buckle. This would also mean that students would have an increase sense of belonging and school pride, because peers would not be able to make fun of other students for the type of clothing that they wear.

Another benefit is how young men are not as distracted when the young girls wear school uniforms. There is no explicit body parts being flaunted so the young men keep their eyes on their school work rather than their peers. Therefore grades would increase and teen pregnancy would decrease.

One major benefit of the school uniforms would be the fact that all the students would have the same clothing on. Therefore, if any intruder enters the school, they would be easily spotted. This could decrease school shootings drastically.

Overall, school uniforms seem to be quite helpful in schools around the world. This is mostly due to the fact that students are wearing the same clothing and are not going to be distinguished as a gang member, poor, or rich. All the students would have the same appearance. Also, it would keep intruders out and prevent school shootings. Altogether, school uniforms can save lives, decrease bullying, increase grades, and decrease teen pregnancy.

Hi, Heather! :D

Seriously now, I can see both sides or rather that uniforms do improve behavior among students but they also infringe on our rights. I feel as though I should pick on a few things you wrote about because I am disputing. :)

On the point of young men being distracted...according to my logic wouldn't young men, for the lack of a better word, 'crave' for young ladies in different outfits? And young men 'focusing' on school work there's a drawback and it's that there's always the possibilty of imagining such and such. Which may encourage, again for the lack of a better word, after-school activities whereas they are not required the uniform and BOOM there's a pregnant teenager.

This one doesn't really have a source that can be cited but it does offer a different point of view.

Hi Bro!

As what you've done to Heather, I feel the obligation to dispute some of the things that you've said.

First of all, young men and women will "crave" each other with uniforms or not. That's just how life is. But what Heather's saying is, with the uniforms being long and proper enough (with no unnecessary skin showing), and students not abusing their right for having dress codes, it would help with the so called "craving". In addition, it also return back to what she said about how it improve students behavior and morals. Obviously, if students in general, would learn how to behave themselves, and listen to teachers about protection during class, then there would be less teen pregnancies.

School uniforms would have some benefits, I'm sure of that. But, it wouldn't save any of the families any money. According to http://www.angelfire.com/, school uniforms can cost up to one weeks worth of regular clothing. Not to mention that you still need the regular clothes for after school, the weekends, and the summer. They only add on to the budget. And as for stopping gang violence, how often are the attacks in school? Generally, gang violence is committed on the streets, and the schools are left free. Violence in school is generally fighting, which they will do, regardless of "colors."

And stopping teenage pregnancy? Again, those acts are being done out of school. You can control what a student wears in school, but you can't force them to wear them outside. And, the old saying, boys will be boys, is more than true. Young men will still look.

And finally, to find intruders within the school. Your main thought on that, a very good one, wouldn't usually work. Most of the shooters in these schools are students in the school themselves. It would only add to the chaos as it would make it harder to say who is doing the shooting. It wouldn't help to identify one at all, nor help to hold them outside, because the shooter now looks exactly like every other kid in the school.

According to www.nola.com school uniforms does save money for clothes. In general, we go to school 5 days a week for 4 years during high school. Theoretically speaking, during all those four years, students wear the same uniform, and some even passed them down to younger siblings in the family. A week worth of regular clothing is definitely higher money during that specific period. But looking ahead, it's definitely cheaper and more affordable. Having my own experience with school uniforms, I would definitely say that it's not as bad as what others portray it to be. You put less effort to As for individuality, you can still use your own fashion style by putting on accessories with the school uniform and express yourself to others with your own personality. It will help other people this way to not judge others based on just their looks and stereotypes.

1. School uniforms can be inexpensive. A lot of schools after graduation, let kids donate their uniforms back to the school. Therefore people who can’t afford new ones, they can purchase used ones. The money the school makes then goes to fund school programs. You made the argument that parents still have to buy clothes for the summer, well they do that now too. We go to school in mostly the winter months. I myself and most of my friends have a decent array of clothing. I have winter, spring, and summer clothes. School uniforms would definitely throw out the winter clothes and some of the spring clothing. Therefore, wouldn't it save parents money to have uniforms?

2. We might not have gang violence in small town Ida Grove, but you would be surprised that a lot of schools do. According to Michelle Arciaga, Wayne Sakamoto, and Errika Fearbry Jones, forty-five percent of high school students say that there are gangs or students who consider themselves to be a part of a gang in their school. Thirty-five percent of middle school students say that there are gangs or students who consider themselves to be part of a gang in their schools.

http://www.nationalgangcenter.gov/content/documents/bulletin-5.pdf

3. School uniforms decrease bullying and harassment. With a good school uniform, body types disappears. It is hard to distinguish who is cool and who is not. It is also harder to see any economic differences between students because they are forced to wear the same clothes. Poor students will not be wearing “rags” to school and popular students will not be wearing the “in style” clothing. Another thing is that the students will have a common hate, the school uniform. Again, this will help break the economic barriers between students. Also, if schools really are worried about boys being distracted by a female’s body, the right school uniform will help. Females and males in schools might then be less sexually driven. I say this because I personally learned about sex at a very young age. My friends told me all about it when I was around the age of 10. Maybe wearing school uniforms will lesson the barrier between girls and boys and decrease the knowledge about the differences each gender has. Therefore young students of different sexes will intermingle with each other not knowing that they are two separate beings and wanting to know why they have different body parts.

4. Your opinion of shooters in the school was that they are mostly kids. Well, take Sandy Hook elementary school for example. That was not a student. If all of the students and teachers had certain outfits to wear, maybe this shooting could have been prevented. Not all school shootings are performed by students. But even if we put a scenario of a student being the shooter, they could still detect which student did it. It's not like everyone's hair, face, skin, and body type will be the same, just the clothing.

I think that school uniforms are a bad ideal because you lose the right of individuality that life as given to you from the start of your life, School Uniforms will cut that freedom from you in the most important years of your life. People have the right to pick what they want to wear to school, not something sexual or dirty, but at least a given choice to what they should wear for another day in there life. On the website www.sheknows.com, some of the other cons shes says is that there is finance issues with this kind of system, since of the low income families wont have the money need to pay for the uniforms since they already payed for clothes for there children's individuality. Also teens could get tattoos and piercings to try to express themselves, and so they feel different from all the rest. Overall The students should have the right to choice what they want to wear. They have the choice to take the classes they want, read the books, they want, and love who they want. So why take away some of there freedoms, in some years they will be on there own. So why take this right for individuality away from them. Just why take a piece of there self away from them in the most important years of there life. These are the most important years of there or your life. School Uniforms will cause you or them to just be another face in the crowd. I rest my case about School Uniforms.

I would definitely be against school uniforms. According to www.greatschools.org, there are many pros and many cons. A few of the pros would be such as discouraging gang activity on campus, helping to identify intruders, and increase a sense of belonging in the school. As for the gangs, even though it isn't a large problem around here, it still can't stop the gangs from getting into a school just because they can't wear their "colors" in school. It will just result in them wearing the "colors" after school, and still being involved. As for determining an intruder, the hype for society lately has been shootings. That would only make those scenarios worse, as then, everyone will look the same as the shooter. And as for the sense of belonging in the school, every school has it's groups. There's no way to stop that, and their will always be people that are excluded from the group. It is impossible to stop that with a uniform.

Uniforms also infringe on students rights of expression. There has to be guidelines to what we can wear, but of course, we are allowed to have our own style. I myself may prefer to dress widely different from anyone else in the school. Who can have that right to take away my thoughts of fashion? Nobody can, nor will anybody ever do so. School uniforms are not the way, perhaps a better education system where we can overpower the problems without having to change the way we dress would be the better solution.

Just because students are wearing different clothes to school doesn't mean the world is ending. Their priority at school is to learn, not to socialize. Students have the weekend and after school to socialize. School uniforms do not turn any students' lives upside down. They still have the same friends, classes, and routine, just with different clothes. So what seems to be the problem? School uniforms do not keep students from expressing themselves creatively. There are plenty of ways for people to express themselves creatively, without doing it in their manner of clothing. Students may learn to write, play music, draw, dance, and all the many things that kids should learn when they're kids. School uniforms keep students from ranking each other according to what they wear, and keeps them in the mindset to learn when they're at school. Expressing themselves without the need for lewd clothing is an amazing talent. Another benefit to school uniforms is getting students ready for the workforce. Many occupations require uniforms. There are jobs out there that let you choose what you wear, but you still have to dress professionally. Therefore school uniforms can help students get adapted to living in the real world.

In all honesty, any good debate would be much better if opinions didn't matter. Among the swathe of people with their heart set on their voice being heard, I'm pretty sure no individual opinion matters when it comes to subjects like this. But that's just an opinion.

I find quite disturbing the answers that are allowed for this debate. I don't necessarily believe uniforms improve behavior. The prospect of it would make sense, but in many cases, no effect is achieved to any extent, and the small benefits found in others are miniscule in comparison to the cost and hassle of maintaining such a task of distribution, management, and enforcement of such a strict dress code. While it's true that schools are, in essence, government institutions, it does not necessarily mean a certain attire should be required. Of course, as sense would have it, there should at least be general guidelines to avoid distractions and to ensure nobody gets troubled or disturbed by public indecency/nudity/another something or other. In spite of my personal beliefs, statistics back me up, as they would any view of mine.

Allow me to quote a fellow student of mine in favor of school uniforms. 'In the study of Lee Jolley, Leigh Southward and Melinda Swafford is that “ their findings indicate that students uniforms have no direct effect on substance abuse, behavioral problems, school safety, school attendance, or academic achievements."' - alejandra14

This is interesting for this person to bring up, considering this goes directly against the side they are self-associated with in this debate. While they state "School uniforms improve people behavior", there exists exactly no scientific evidence that this is true, especially in the source she cited, and the evidence that does exist is controversial and usually done in secluded areas on small numbers or non-diverse groups of people. It's obvious that uniforms have virtually no direct effect on a district's students' well-being, but have a considerable effect on the wallets of the local parents of said district.

I don't think school uniforms are necessary. The way a person dresses is on their personality, its a way for kids to express themselves. Also it is said on www.angelfire.com that uniforms wouldn't teach children how to accept others that are different from them. Angelfire.com also listed some other facts, but that one definitely stuck out the most. Yes, everybody would look the same, and there are some cons to school uniforms, but isn't it important for children to be able to define themselves and be creative on what they wear rather than letting them go to school uncomfortable? Also many students prefer to be unique, and tons would be against going to school looking like an army.

I agree kids should be free to express themselves and have a choice in what they wear to school. I also think that if a school would require uniforms there would be students who would misplace or lose the uniforms or get them dirty. I understand why some private schools have uniforms but for many public schools their just isn't a real need for them. About.com says that "Because uniforms single out students as being from one school, this might lead to trouble with students from other schools." This could be a problem at sporting events or other school activities.

School uniforms are a bad idea because uniforms distract the students individually. I think we should get to wear whatever we want because it expresses everyone's personality and how they feel. Also if families don’t have the money to purchase the uniforms they will have to work even harder and have less money. Statistic from the pros and cons of uniforms show that students wearing uniforms are bullied by students from other schools that don’t have uniforms. In today's society kids and teenagers are so negative about everything and are so hard headed they would just complain about the uniforms constantly so it would save the teachers a headache without uniforms. I think schools control what we do enough the way it is so let us dress how we please. If you want to read more pros and cons the web site is below.

I think Hunter is right. Kids would be bullied because of the uniforms. Families would have to purchase not only the uniforms but also regular clothes to wear elsewhere, when you could just buy regular clothes and wear them both to school and everywhere else. I also think the school controls us enough. It would also cause students to become rebels and say “i’m not wearing that, i’ll wear what I want”. They will just do what they want. As sheknows.com says, it is a financial burden on low income families and the rules are very hard to enforce.

I agree with Hunter, some people seem to forget that uniforms cost money and you're going to school for five days. Kids can't wear the same outfit for eight hours every day for five days. So you'll need more than one uniform, and if you have more than one kid in school, the uniforms will add up quickly. I did do research however on financial assistance for the school uniforms. According to frenchtoast.com, parents have said that three uniforms cost about the same as one pair of designer jeans. But what kind of designer jeans are we talking here? :) Anyway, the point is is that I agree that we shouldn't have school uniforms, but I just wanted to make clear that financial assistance is available for them.

Karlie is right, you would have to have more than one uniform for a whole week of school unless you wash the same one every day but that would be a pain. Buying more uniforms means a bigger burden on low income families. There is financial assistance is avalible at no cost to taxpayers says frenchtoast.com.

I feel that school uniforms are unnecessary for school protocol, from what I researched, school uniforms are estimated to cost about $50 per individual. I feel that our schools could use that money to spend on more important things for the schools. Schools all across America are considering if school uniform would be acceptable or if it would cause problems. School uniforms could pose a problem, damage to the uniforms could occur, or could be misplaced. The idea of uniforms could make schools look formal and intellectual. In my opinion, I feel that school uniforms shouldn’t be enforced, I feel that schools shouldn’t enforce the mandatory use of school uniforms, because they should have the obligation to wear what they prefer, as long as it obeys the protocol in the school systems.

Some schools are requiring dress codes. Having dress codes would prevent students for wearing inappropriate clothing, but it also would make every family buy new clothing. Clothing makes everybody themselves. By the way people dress gives them their own personality. Kate Green, a seventh-grader at Haven Middle School, says that “there are skinny girls that wear leggings and don’t get caught, but as soon as a heavier set person wears them, they get in trouble for not following the dress code.” "It puts everyone on the same playing field when they're at school," says Kitty Rotella, principal of St. Mark's Episcopal School. Some schools have their own dress code such as us for example. There is a rule for how short shorts are, or how many fingers we have to have on our sleeves. Emily Sweeney states that uniforms boost people’s pride, relieve peer pressure, and help people focus on school work. This is why school uniforms should not be banned, but should have restrictions.

I believe that school uniforms wouldn't have a single bit of an effect on bullying or discrimination. They take away a way for students to express themselves and not being able to express their feelings in some way and I feel that in some people, that would come out as hate for other people such as the ones whom are enforcing this uniform upon them thus increasing insubordination in schools. So really a school uniform would have the opposite and undesired effect. To me a imposing a school uniform to "stop bullying and discrimination" is on the same line as painting everyone's skin the same color to be rid of racism. Absolutely pointless and a horrible thing to do.

I can relate to the point that Alex is trying to make. They think that school uniforms will stop bullying, but most bullying isn't about one's attire, but more along the lines of someones personality, something about that person that the bully doesn't like, could be their sexual orientation, or the way they talk, or a physically altering disease. Bullying will continue, uniforms or no uniforms.

I don't like the idea of wearing uniforms in school. Sure it might prevent bullying, but we as students can't express ourselves in we're forced to all wear the same thing. Some negative things that come about from uniforms are the price of them, uniforms can be very expensive these days, another thing is that, again, they take away our individuality. I enjoy being able to wear shorts, a t shirt and sweatshirt to school everyday, and would hate it if I had that taken away.. It works for the most part in private schools, but if we brought them to public schools it would cause problems for a majority, if not all, of the student body.

I believe that making a child wear a school uniform is unnecessary. There are good points to both sides of this debate but I think that by making somebody wear something that they don't want to wear will cause more problems for the superintendent and school faculty. Having to constantly worry about what qualifies as the correct way to wear these uniforms or for students who will rebel and refuse to wear them in general. Greatschools.org states that by enforcing this on public schools it's simply a band-aid to the violence that it happening and I agree. Just because you put a child in different clothes, yes they may not be judging them as harshly as they would if there weren't uniforms but kids will find something else to bully these kids about. Bullying in school does not just happen because of clothing, there are many sources of bullying. But I do agree that would be a lot easier to identify a school intruder. And as for it being cheaper for students to wear uniforms, I disagree. Simply because you will have to purchase a few of these uniforms but also the parents will still have to buy these kids clothes to wear outside of school. These kids are not going to want to wear a uniform when they are not in school.

I think that school uniforms are a bad idea. They would give students a bad attitude and give them every reason possible to complain all the time. According to sheknows.com, uniforms detract students from their individuality, students will always find ways to express themselves, leading to less desirable forms of expression. The extra cost for these would be a big problem too. It would be hard for low income families. Its a financial burden. That would be one of the main problems of this idea. Uniforms for a public school would be just absolutely ridiculous. Making low income families pay for something like that would unfair and rude. I wouldn’t ever be for uniforms.

I would be against school uniforms personally because I don't like being dressed the same as everyone else. With everyone wearing the same exact thing everyday doesn't give you the choice to chose what you want to wear. Some schools have banned people from wearing leggings, and if they do then they have to wear a shirt or skirt over it that goes to there fingertips which means it has to cover there behind. If this was the cause for our school we would have a little bit of anger to say because most girls wear leggings to school everyday. a federal court agreed with a school district in Morgan Hill, Calif., after some high school students were told not to wear American flag T-shirts on the Mexican holiday of Cinco de Mayo in 2010. The worry was that the shirts would incite conflict with the school's many Hispanic students. Then there was the matter of yoga pants, which are tight like leggings, but flared at the bottom. Did the fingertip rule also apply to those types of pants, especially when no one could tell the difference if they were tucked into boots, which is also a popular style among teens?

To some people school uniforms are boring and children should be able to be creative with what they get to wear. Also uniforms are expensive and some students may not be able to afford it. Uniforms also don’t let people be unique and show their character. Certain school rules are ok like how short some shorts can be but they shouldn’t be so strict that a student can’t show their character. Personally I would not like wearing a uniform.

School uniforms have been a popular debate for quite sometime whether they benefit students or hinder their success. Many parents would agree in saying that they are not needed and the major reason being is that they are expensive. Unlike shopping for yourself there is only one option that you get when having to get uniforms, there are no alternative stores. Many also believe that uniforms make it so all kids are equal and it cuts down on bullying which in part is true but also not. People will still find a way to single you out and pick on you even if you wear the same clothing. More or less it’s an opinion and if you want uniforms, attend a school that requires them and if not then find one with no school uniform plan and as simple as that.

There are many people who like uniforms and others who think they are the stupidest things in the world. Something that people don't often think about is that THEY COST MONEY. Some people don't have money to spend on uniforms and stuff that goes with it. Yes uniforms can save lives and "Stop gang related violence", but sadly some people don't have money to spend on that stuff. And if some people couldn't afford them they got hand me downs and hand me downs are tore and stained.

Secondly, the myth of uniforms is that is is a social leveler. But in many European countries with good schools DON'T have uniforms. In the 90's, Bill Clinton thought that uniforms might be the answer to gang-related violence, but that didn't work. Just because you make students wear uniforms does not mean't that they are going to stop what they are doing. People are still gonna do what they were doing before the school made them wear them.

My personal opinion is that uniforms will make people more upset because when people wear what they wanna wear to school they would be more happier. They can express their personality and enjoy school. If someone is stuck in a polo and skirt and don't feel comfortable then that's just gonna make them feel insecure.

According to Suzanne Moore she said she had missed a lot of school on account of the attitude and having to wear the uniform. A teacher once said to her, "Don't ask questions, girl, and put your tie on properly." Do you really want that kind of attitude going around a school? Kids don't listen to what teachers or parents say most of the time anyways.

I agree with you people don't look or thank about how much having uniforms is going to coast. Increasing numbers of students are wearing school uniforms. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review the percentage of public schools requiring uniforms increased from 12 percent in 1999-2000 to 19 percent in 2009-10, according to the U.S. Department of Education. The percentage of principals who reported a strict dress code increased from 47 percent in 1999-2000 to 57 percent. Many students like to choose what they wear and what there fashion is they don't want to be like everyone else, but a pro about having school uniforms is that you would be able to tell when there is an intruder in the school because everyone will be wearing the same thing except for that person. Like I said in other people's comment. Uniforms does cost less in the long run and I know this based on personal experience. You shop less because you don't need that much clothes and if you think about it. A uniform that you can wear for four years cost less than a trip to buckle. plus, you can even get cheaper uniforms from students that already graduated. And like I said, even if your wearing the same thing as the person next to you, it doesn't mean that you can be you own individual self and that you are like everyone else. It just means that your equal to everyone else because it limits the stereotype that happens around school that there basically is no "popular" kids and "losers".

School uniforms are a huge topic in our school system. The belief that the kids should be able to chose their clothing for themselves and achieve individuality. But on the other side of the argument saying that the kids are making an inappropriate choice when getting dressed in the morning. For the past decade, the argument between children, parents, and schools has always fluctuated toward the clothes the kids are choosing to wear in school. From the anti Obama shirts to the inappropriate sayings, the subject of school uniforms has always been in debate. Should the schools take away the right the children have to be their own person and pick their own clothes, or just leave it as is and set guidelines to help the matter not get out of hand? Sure, by having the uniforms would help prevent gangs from forming, encourage discipline, help identify intruders in the school, and diminish the economic and social barrier between students. But by taking away the kids choice of clothing, we are also taking away that same right to make our own choices. It takes away their right to freedom of expression and right of free living and thinking. By putting kids in the same exactly clothing, you can't expect that child to figure what kind of person they really are at a young age. To them, they will just look like the person sitting next to them. "Do Uniforms Make Schools Better?" GreatSchools. N.p., n.d. Web. 24 Apr. 2014.

I agree completely with Rachelle on the points that she has made. The point that she made about a child not being able to find who he/she is because of wearing a school uniform instead of being able to choose what they want to wear what they want could be very true but also, your clothes should not be something that should have to identify you. By these kids in school wearing school uniforms according to greatschools.com kids have more of a sense of belonging in their schools, along with attendance increases. I disagree with both of these statements. Just by having these kids clothes changed it won't make them want to come to school more often, if it were me, I would want to come to school even less so I wouldn't have to wear them. Another point that Rachelle has made in her post is about inappropriate clothing choices. I think this should be handled by the parents or guardians of the child to teach them what is appropriate to wear, not the schools.

I don't like the idea of have a school uniform at all. Some people might like it but I don't want to compared or be the same as anyone. Everyone's different why not let people express that. But I have been told my someone that when their school had uniforms, the girl's skirt got shorter and shorter sometimes but how is that any better then wearing short shorts in the summer? I think people should be able to express theirselves with what they wear which by what they wear might say something bout them. If they have a uniform for school do they have to stay in that uniform for like P.E. or do we have a different uniform or can we wear regular cloths?

Students that go to public schools should be able to pick what outfits they wear to school. On the other hand, private school's students should wear uniforms, just because they are under different rules that are more strict.

The main reason I am against school uniforms is because students would have to purchase the uniforms to wear Monday-Friday, but then they'd still have to buy other clothes to wear on the weekends. So it's like having two wardrobes.

According to angelfire.com, if all students wore uniforms, they wouldn't learn that people are different than themselves and they can express themselves differently. From designer clothes to goodwill clothes, people choose how they express themselves in a variety of different ways, and I think requiring students to wear uniforms goes against their right to express what and how they're feeling.

Another thing I read was parents are offended that what they buy or pick out for their children isn't good enough. In some cases, the parents buy the clothes for their children and have a say on what is being bought. Parents are not happy that what they are choosing their child to wear is unacceptable to the school.

Why should students that go to private schools have to wear uniforms? Those kids have to pay a tuition and everything. In public schools we don’t pay a tuition. If anything, we should have to wear uniforms not private schools. That argument has no support to it.

Another thing you talk about is the price of school uniforms. When you think about it, we go to school during the winter months mostly. Therefore we have a lot of sweaters, coats, long sleeve shirts, and regular shirts. Well, if we had to wear school uniforms, the winter clothing would merely be wiped out of our wardrobe. Therefore, our parents would save money.

You say that if all students wore uniforms, they wouldn’t learn that people are different than themselves and they can express themselves differently. This is not true. As I said before, we go to school throughout the winter months. We have weekends and the whole summer off of school where we wouldn’t have to wear uniforms. In this time, we can express ourselves and show that we are not all similar. You also talk about how its not fair for students to have to wear uniforms because it restricts their right to express how they feel. You should know by now that any student that expresses themselves out of the normal crowd of students get laughed at. That is one main cause of bullying. There are so many different “types” of students. We have the nerds, popular, goth, athletic, etc. When you think about it though, if you are not popular or athletically dressed, you get picked on. There is always something for someone to judge you for.

Clothing parents buy for their children are sometimes unacceptable. Have you seen the way some girls dress in our school? This is a true statement. I was in Debs about a month ago with Erin Fineran and there was a girl and her mother who were trying on clothes. The girl came out of the dressing room and the mother said, “It doesn’t show your thigh enough”. This girl had on shorts that made her look like she was wearing a thong, it was disgusting. Then her mom proceeded to hand her a crop top. If I were to dress like this, my mom would slap me.

Many schools always have the conversation about school uniforms. If school uniforms really would help the student body with academics, then why doesn't every school have them. According to the article “What to wear back to school” nearly one out of five schools require school uniforms in 2010. I thought it would be less than that, because there are many schools around us that has school uniforms. I am against school uniforms because I like to wear what I want and not look the same as everyone else. According to the article “What to wear back to school” students try so hard to one-up other kids from hairstyles to shoes. I can see this happening in school, like in middle school kids always tried to one-up the other But you can see in high school that no one care as much about what people wear. Yes there is certain things that I want to wear to school that I can’t because I am afraid of getting made fun of because I have heard other people get made fun of them because of what they wear.

Many people can not afford school uniforms and then also have to buy clothes for outside of school. According to the article “School Uniforms” this lady could not afford to pay for a school uniform so she had to pick up another job just to pay for it. Also her child got cool shoes that she wanted to wear to school and she couldn’t unless her mom wrote a note. I think this is ridiculous because you should be able to wear what you want. Also if she had to pick up another job to pay for school uniforms because the school is making her kid wear it is outrageous.

I just think school uniforms should not even be talked about because they cost way too much and no one really likes them. People should wear what they want and not what the school wants them to wear.

I don’t think school uniforms are a very good idea. In the article Uniforms in Public Schools and the First Amendment: A Constitutional Analysis it states that one of the biggest reasons uniforms are opposed is it takes individuality away from the kids. I agree with this because I feel everybody should be themselves, dress how they want, and do whatever makes them happy. Kids should be able to wear shirts supporting their favorite sports team, music group, tv show, etc. I’m not saying the students should dress like they work on the corners of the street, but there should be a little freedom and individuality.

I believe that school uniforms are a bad idea because they are not practical from an economical standpoint. David Ankersen makes the argument that with school uniforms, “students now have two wardrobes, one for leisurely wear and a second set comprised of school polo that cost much more.” Many people argue that school uniforms will help those who struggle financially because they will not have to buy as many clothes and won’t have to worry about buying clothes that are in style. I don’t agree with this and one reason is that parents would have to buy two separate wardrobes for their kids. While many of us already have more than one set of clothes it is possible to wear most of them in more than one place. For example, you can wear “church” or dress clothes to school if you want or for a school concert. Except for some seasonal clothes like tank tops and short shorts or clothes with inappropriate logos most clothes could be worn in everyday life or at school as long as you feel comfortable in them. Another reason school uniforms are not economical is that they usually are not cheap and may not be able to be purchased at cheaper clothing stores such as Walmart, Goodwill, or even garage sales where some parents may be shopping. School uniforms also eliminate the possibility of hand me downs from relatives or friends because (unless they go to your school) their clothes most likely won’t fit the uniform requirements. I do think restricting what clothing is worn is okay so that it’s appropriate but I don’t think that you should be required to wear a specific uniform.

Some people think that if kids wear uniforms they will not have to worry about them being picked on or teased about their clothing. I don’t believe that this is the case though. Kids will find other ways to separate themselves from the rest. School uniforms can make kids feel awkward and when you have to have shirts tucked in it can make you look fatter and that could be a cause for being picked on and for kids to have a lower self-esteem. Robert Zullo was told by Megan Burnley, a 13 year old that she hates “wearing pants up so high and tucking in shirts. When you tuck in your shirt you look fat. And if you don’t get the right shoes, you get teased.” Another things is that if you don’t have the “right” kind of uniform you could be picked on because it’s not high quality or right brand or bought at a certain store. There will always be the name brand clothes whether it is uniforms or regular clothes. I don’t feel that uniforms are going to change this.

I don't believe that students should be labeled with uniforms, according to http://www.greatschools.org/find-a-school/defining-your-ideal/121-school-uniforms.gs, Uniforms violate a students right to freedom of expression, which is something I agree with because some students don't say much, but the clothes they are wearing express their personalities more than there words ever could. Besides the fact that uniforms don't let kids express themselves, it also has little impact on bullying, the same website also says that uniforms are simply a band-aid on the issue of school violence, I also agree with this, because no matter what a student is wearing there are always students that find anything to make fun of other students for whether it be their weight or complexion they still will get made fun of by someone.

There is also the issue of being comfortable. Some students may not be comfortable in there uniforms and may get to the point where they cannot focus on their schoolwork but only focus on how uncomfortable the clothes they are wearing are.

The way someone dresses reflects there personality. Uniforms are becoming more common through out schools. The percentage of schools with uniforms is 23%, which isn't that many. Also the average costs for parents to purchase a uniform is $249, some parents and students wouldn't be able to afford that. Besides the cost, uniforms also restrict students from being who they are and how they express them selves by the way they dress. I would be against uniforms because i think they would be inconvenient and i wouldn't want to have to wear the same thing every day.

I agree that there are less benefits to school uniforms from my point of view. According to http://www.eduguide.org/article/should-kids-wear-school-uniforms " school uniforms increase a students self-esteem because they do not have to participate in a student fashion show. Dressing alike reminds the children that what is important is on the inside." I do not necessarily agree with this because, students are already comfortable in the clothes they wear, what would make a uniform more comfortable. I think people would be more uncomfortable in clothes they don't like which would lower their self-esteem because they are self conscious in the uniform and then they won't be able to concentrate on what they are doing only the way they look and how they feel, they will not get more homework or better grades they may not even want to come to school because of the fact that they have to put on clothes they don't like AND drag themselves to school.

School uniforms take away your right to be original. I am against them because if our school required us to wear school uniforms it takes away your self-identity. According to kidsfashion.com when schools require students to wear uniforms the parents have to buy them which puts more pressure on the family budget. Also not all students are comfortable wearing the same thing. Some people only wear shorts, or boots and jeans. In my opinion school uniforms will make parents pay more money for their children’s clothing, and if our school was to implement this, there would be a lot of angry parents and students.

I definitely don't think having school uniforms should even be an option. According to the article, "Do Uniforms Make Schools Better?" some of the problems with having school uniforms revolve around taking away a student's freedom of expression and individuality, cost too much and are just a financial burden, and are hard to enforce. There are some benefits, but there are just so many downfalls. I think the main and definitely the biggest problem with having school uniforms is the fact that it interferes with individuality. Another one is that it just adds more to the cost of going to school. Overall, it looks like the bad out-weighs the good and they aren't worth it.
